Budgeting Your Finances
Budgeting may sound like a boring and needless task, full of lists of numbers and mathematical calculations. In fact, budgeting is an interesting and fairly easy process that is simply used to see where your money goes. There is very little calculating involved in budgeting, and the rewards of seeing how you spend your money and where you can save can far outweigh the cost of the small amount of time that it takes to create a budget. Once you are earning an income, budgeting is a powerful tool that you can use to make sure that you are making the most out of your money.
To start budgeting, first determine how much money you have coming in each month as income. Next, write down all of the regular monthly payments that you make. These fixed payments include your house payment or rent, car payment, insurance, and Internet and cable services.
Next, list all of the other things that you spend your money on. These are variable payments which may change from month to month and include spending on utilities, gasoline, credit card payments, entertainment, and more. Look at your last billing statement and write down how much you spent in each category. If you are spending more than you make, you may want to reevaluate your finances.
Following the Money Trail
You may be surprised to see how much money you’re spending, particularly in certain categories such as entertainment, dining out, or shopping. Perhaps you want to put more money towards your credit card bill but never seem to have enough. Now is the time to consider a realistic monthly limit for your problematic categories.
Try to plan your purchases before you make them and stick to your new budgeting plan for the next month. You will likely find that you are more aware of when and where you are spending money and feel that you have more control over your income as a whole. Knowing what is happening to your hard-earned money and being able to make informed decisions without having to use your credit card can be a liberating experience.
